The newspapers gave the same kind of account as Gordie did, but they went into a little more detail. The UPI article that went across the country had the headline RANGER’S NOSE BUSTED BY HOWE IN HOCKEY TILT. It went on to tell what happened:

Fontinato became enraged when he felt Howe was picking on New York rookie Eddie Shack. He challenged the Detroit star behind the Red Wings net and Howe accepted, whipping off his gloves and piling into “Leapin’ Lou.” Then, while officials and players stood by seemingly awed by the spectacle, Fontinato and Howe exchanged punches for almost a full minute before being pulled apart. “Howe’s a pretty good fighter,” Fontinato admitted later. “He kinda rearranged my nose. But I wasn’t losing.”…Fontinato wasn’t the only player who spilled blood. Shack suffered a deep cut scalp when allegedly high-sticked by Howe seconds before the main event. Warren Godfrey of the Red Wings was hospitalized with a concussion, presumably received in a tussle with Shack, and Harry Howell of the Rangers had four stitches to his chin. Nobody knows who hit Howell.
